Jewellery Care Guide

It's important to take proper care of your jewellery to keep it looking its best. Failure to protect it can result in scratches, wear and even breakages.

Extra care should be taken with pearls as they have a very soft surface compared to other jewellery materials.

Wearing your jewellery

Be mindful of the activities you do when wearing your jewellery. If there is a risk of snagging, scratching or exposure to chemicals you should remove jewellery.

Certain gemstones are not appropriate for everyday wear if you have an active lifestyle. For example pearls and opals are easily scratched and better suited to occasion wear. This is especially important in rings which are subject to more wear and tear than other jewellery.

Wearing your jewellery to bed risks snagging and should be avoided.

Remove jewellery for swimming, cleaning, and before using hand sanitiser. Chemicals including ammonia, bleach and chlorinated water can damage gemstones and precious metals so they must be avoided when wearing jewellery.

Avoid wearing different metals and alloys where they may rub together, for example an 18 carat and 9 carat gold ring on the same finger. Doing so will cause excessive wear over time.

Diamonds may wear and scratch metals and gemstones they rub against when worn so this should be avoided.

Cleaning your jewellery

Regular at home cleaning will keep your jewellery looking good as new. To clean your jewellery at home wipe it clean with a soft lint free cloth.

Avoid using jewellery cleaning chemicals as they may damage the surface of the metal and gemstones.

Storing your jewellery

Wrap each piece individually in soft silk or cotton to avoid damage caused by abrasion against other metals or gemstones.

Don't keep jewellery containing pearls and opals in a sealed container,  they need moisture from the air to prevent drying.
